Doi Suthep-Pui National Park includes not only the rich natural resources of plants, wildlife and spectacular landscapes, but is diverse in culture again. With hill tribes and waterfalls, this mountain range which spans over 260sq/km is a maze of fascinating things to see and do.
Did you know that the mountains of Doi Suthep-Pui National Park are consideded part of the Himalayas? They are actaully part of the foothills of the Thanon Tongchai Mountain range which reaches far into Southeast Asia.
A trip up Doi Suthep is a trip worth taking. Not only does the natural landscape, packed with towering trees and over 360 bird unique bird species, bring awe and inspiration to each and every visitor, but the cultural heritage of the Lanna kingdom and the temples and tribes found atop are just as impressive.
Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, otherwise known as the Doi Suthep Temple, is the famous mountain that is found near the peak of the nearest mountain to the city of Chiagn Mai. The temple was established in 1371 by King Kuena, from the Mangrai dynasty. It is a key landmark of Chiang Mai and can be seen from anywhere in the city. The main features of this temple are the golden Chang San-style pagoda and the breathtaking scenery of the city from the temple’s terrace. It is said that some of the Buddha’s relics lie at the base of the golden pagoda.
Hmong Khun Chang Khian village is place where local Hmong villagers still wear traditional clothing, sell traditional Hmong handicrafts and live in traditional Hmong-style homes. Normally, from late December to January, you can experience the exceptional sensation of the Namg Phaya Suea Khrong Flowers (Prunus cerasoides D.Don). These beautiful flowers blossom around the area of Khun Chang Khian.
